We are excited to announce the Fall Semester winner of our $500 academic scholarship, Michelle Vu, a student of North Lake College in Texas. Learn more about her proudest achievements and her academic and career goals.
My educational goal is to achieve a Bachelor’s in Arts, Technology, and Emerging Communication at the University of Texas at Dallas. Currently, I’m attending community college and am in the midst of working towards an Associates of Science and plan on transferring for the Fall of 2020. In the future, I want to work in the game development industry, create 3D models, landscapes, and be a part of the process of creating something others can enjoy. By being given the opportunity to further my education, I would be taking steps to pursuing my dream career and gain more experience within this field. I have a passion for designing and creating; I want to let that passion be a source of enjoyment for others as well.
I learned that one of the greatest rewards of providing care for someone are the emotions of joy, appreciation, and love they feel as they aren't struggling through their problems by themselves. Although they may be going through difficult times, it is always an amazing feeling to know that there is someone there for you and is willing to help you out. It gives them strength and willpower to push through the issues they are faced with while you also feel rejoiced knowing that you are doing what you can to help someone and offering another hand. It’s always nice to help the people you love and those within your community. When I did community service, I found that by helping others, I found enjoyment in the activities we were doing as well. It’s not only productive, but also helped me develop as a person and learning who I am. I remember a time when I volunteered at a recreation center and helped paint the walls. Even if it’s a rather simple task, I thought the process was rather soothing and satisfying, and by the end of it, the final product was magnificent seeing how it all looked so new. At the same time, the help also benefited the community and have a brand-new activity room.
One of my most meaningful achievements was taking part in a challenge with six other people in my class and advancing to nationals. Together, we were given the task of creating an unmanned aircraft system that could be used for agricultural purposes; theoretically, it had to be capable of completing spray and survey missions over a field of crops. As part of the group, my main task was to design the drone using CAD software that I had never used before. In the timeframe I was given, I was able to learn how to create 3D models, thus beginning my passion for creating and desire to become a game developer. I love making art using digital programs and this experience helped fuel that passion. In this competition, I also faced a major challenge myself; I had to face my fear of public speaking and help present the project in front of an audience as well as a panel of knowledgeable judges. Personally, I am a very shy and naturally quiet person and almost never talk in class. Considering my personality, knowing that I had to stand in front of an entire room of people and having to speak felt like an absolute nightmare. Literally, I was already panicking months before the presentation, but I didn’t want to let my social anxiety control me. After several weeks of preparation, constantly practicing what to say, I memorized my whole speech and managed to get through it. Despite my fear of public speaking, I was still able to conquer it head on. Even though we didn’t win, I still felt like I had accomplished something extraordinary.
